Maui Police Department

A fitting green over white theme echoes throughout the Maui PD website.  This Calea accredited agency is well represented by their information-rich website.  It covers everything from firearms permits to patrol sectors to an excellent page on agency programs.  Patch Traders are welcome too.  All of it falls under a top shared border of two Hawaiian badge impressions over a picturesque Hawaiian  background.  Nice job PD and Webmaster!

STUFF EVERY STREET

COP SHOULD HAVE

Cool Cop stuff.  Cop stuff is what all LEO's and policeman should have.

Cop Stuff

Silent Vibrating Metal Detector

Gear Up!A hand-held metal detector doesn't replace a physical hand search, but it can locate weapons that may be well secreted on a suspect.  This tool can save your life.

This model is a silent vibrating metal detector designed for law enforcement use. 7.9" long and weighing only 8.8 ounces.  It comes with a black heavy duty nylon holster allowing the officer to wear it on a utility belt.  It also comes with a car mounting kit, 9v battery and 3 year manufacturers limited warranty.  It goes for about $150. Click here to visit the site that sells them.

CPR Mask

The days of doing the mouth-to-mouth portion of CPR directly where the rescuer places his or her lips directly on the victim's mouth are long over.

By now you have probably seen the CPR mask pictured to the right.

This tool is essential for road officers or any officer in a position where CPR might be necessary.

The mask goes for about eight bucks and is reusable after cleaning.  Also, it comes in its own case.

Leatherman Multi-Purpose Tool

LEO's often find themselves in situations where they could really use a knife, a pair of pliers, a screwdriver or even a bottle opener for those after-work activities.  Pictured to the left is a tool called a Leatherman.  Most of you are probably familiar with it, but very few officers actually keep one with them.  This particular model, the Leatherman ST200 Super Tool, has the following features: Needlenose Pliers, Regular Pliers, Wire Cutters, Hard-Wire Cutters, Clip-Point Knife, Serrated Knife, Wood / Bone Saw, Metal / Wood File, 9 in. / 22 cm Ruler, Can / Bottle Opener, S / M / L Screwdriver Phillips Screwdriver, (#1 / #2) Electric Crimper, Wire Stripper, and  Awl Punch.

Leatherman models range in price from about $20.00 to $70.00.  It is a perfect tool for your brief case.

Latex Glove PouchGear Up!

How many times have you needed but not had a pair of latex gloves?  They are handy for avoiding blood on first aid calls, searching a fellow who is not too keen on bathing, handling narcotics, dealing with suspicious substances, and the list goes on.  Today, there is no reason not to have them on hand.  Pictured to the right is a latex glove pouch.  It goes right on the utility belt.  They make less conspicuous pouches for plain clothes officers.  It can hold two pair of gloves, and this is an item you will use and use often.

Digital Voice Recorder

You see the violation, activate your lights, and stop the car.  As soon as you approach, the driver exclaims "I'm sick of you cops always harassing me."  Immediately, you smell the filing of another frivolous internal affairs complaint.

With a digital voice recorder in your arsenal, you can immediately protect yourself.  Set it to record, and have a record of all conversation between you and this driver.

Many officers who do not have the benefit of the microphone from a patrol car mounted camera have been investing in these voice recorders.  They are an excellent way of protecting yourself.

The one featured in the picture is a Sony CD-ST10 Digital Voice Recorder which goes for about $125 to $149.  This model has up to 5 hours and 34 minutes of recording time, holds up to five separate files of recorded messages, is light and small.

It comes with PC download software, two AAA batteries, a carrying case, an earphone (MDR-ED228LP), a USB cable (RK-G136), and a user's manual.

There are other models on the market that cost less.  Whatever you choose, add one of these to your personal arsenal of tools.

Note:  Before using such a recorder, review the legality of recording citizens without their consent.  In some states this practice may be illegal and an officer could be subject to criminal and / or civil prosecution.

Tactical Mirror

A tactical mirror is necessity for anyone who dons a uniform, and it should be kept right on your belt.  This tool is essential for all LEO's whether you're trying to get a peek into the cell of a violent inmate or effecting a building search during a high school shooting situation.  Simply, it is a necessity for every personal arsenal of every modern-day, tactical thinking law officer.

Gear Up!

Hidden Cuff Key

In the event you ever face a situation where you are ever handcuffed, (we are referring to on the job) this is an excellent emergency tool to have.  It is a belt keeper with a cuff key secreted inside.  An assailant would probably take your normal keys.  Having this backup key could save your life.  They are available at most police supply stores.

TranZport Hood

There is nothing more offensive than when a prisoner spits at you.  It is absolutely disgusting and infuriating.  There is a relatively new product on the market which solves this problem.  It is called the TranZport Hood.  Simply, it is a cloth and mesh hood that is put over the prisoner's head.  He can spit all he wants.  This hood will trap all of his saliva in the hood with him, but he will still easily get air.  Streicher's Law Enforcement Products carries the TranZport Hood, and it can be purchased online.  As of this writing, the hood goes for $4.95.  Oh, it should not be used on any person that is unconscious, vomiting, in respiratory distress or in obvious need of medical attention and persons wearing a hood should be under constant supervision of the responsible parties.  (TJ, the hood goes on the prisoner's head, not the officer's head.  :)    )

Stinger FlashlightGear Up!

The Stinger Flashlight is an excellent tool for any road cop, detective, or foot patrol officer.  With a length of  7.4 inches and a weight of just 10 ounces, this tool can be secured on a belt or in a pocket without adding weight or causing discomfort to an officer.  The touch activation feature is ideal for situations where light discipline is crucial, and the casing of the light is very strong.
